Our lawyer later objected because one of the women judges in reading back what I had said, made a slight mistake.
| Woman lawyer: | "I glaube, dass Frau Tuchmann wagte, dass Herr Otto Tuchmann stolz war, nicht die Familie." ("I believe Mrs. Tuchmann said that Mr. Tuchmann was proud not the family.") |
| Rose: | "Richtig. Aber wir waren auch stolz. Er war ein feiner schoener Mann." ("Right, But we were also proud. He was a fine good looking man.") |
The correction is made and the judge asked me whether all that has been written and read, is in agreement with my testimony. The session is now over and I can breath again while I take a seat in another part of the courtroom.
Later our lawyer told me he was pleased, my husband is pleased, the judges all bow cordially to me as they file out.
And I am pleased. For I am quite sure that if any good develops from my testimony it will be because of my German ‐ not in spite of it. So perhaps it was just as well that in my youth I spent insufficient time on German homework. And if there is any moral to my tale it is that sometimes it is better not to be too TUECHTIG (capable).
