Grandfather Frederick passed away on May 2, 1916 at 75 years old, unexpectedly and while he was in the best of health. In a sense he was the most fortunate of my forebears. Jews were finally recognized as German citizens with all rights of citizenship. Business, particularly after the Franco‐Prussian war of 1871 was very good. His daughter and three sons were happily married and doing very well. World War I was still going favorably, for Germany.

All this good fortune and prosperity never made him extravagant or conceited. To the contrary, he was a very modest man respected and liked by everyone. He was also charitable and public‐minded and made a large donation to the Germanische Museum in Nuremberg. He is buried in the "Alte Friedhof" (Old Cemetery) in Nuremberg in the same plot with his wife.
