Jonathan Kohn may make one or more deals on any day. In every case he takes a small sample of his purchase. This will be sent to the office in Nuremberg for inspection by the partners. They will find the hops "so so". Only once in perhaps a year will they cone across a specially good sample of what is called ''exhibitions” hops. Never will they tell a buyer that he did a good job. This may make him conceited and neglectful in future.
Buying from the producer was not the only possibility of obtaining hops sold to breweries.
A hop market existed in Nuremberg, close to the "Mauthalle" which was very important at one time. At that time a buyer would bring a stencil and mark the bales with his firm's name so he would be sure the right bales were delivered to his warehouse. The seller or "Kommissionaer" obtained his hops on commission from the farmer, who hoped to get a better price by dealing in this way. However, gradually the dealers found it more advantageous to buy directly from the producer and the marketeer lost most of his importance.
