My Ancestors

INTRODUCTION
One reason for my writing this brochure is to make a small contribution to the efforts of the Leo Baeck Institute to preserve the history of the Jews from Germany. Another is to furnish some information to those members of the family who are interested in their ancestors..
I did not attempt to trace the history of the family beyond Marx Tuchmann whose name was Mordechai Levy before he changed it in connection with the Judenedikt of June 10, 1813. In addition to hops he traded in Tuch (clothes) and therefore chose the name Tuchmann, the name Hopf having been alloted to another person. Since the name Levy is so usual I do not believe any further investigation will have much chance of success.
I greatly appreciate the policy of the Leo Baeck Institute which not only preserves brochures such as this, but also letters and other documents of the type which I am sending: Map and pictures of the family home, copy of the Will of Salomon Tuchmann etc. etc. Without this help these papers would probably be lost, while they are now easily available to any one interested.
I hope many persons feel the same and will likewise donate similar material to the Leo Baeck Institute.
Stamford, Connecticut July 1984.
