Julius Rosenwald (⁎ Bamberg 9th November 1874, † 1st July 1945)
and Sofie Tuchmann (⁎ Nuremberg 29th August 1886, † 25th February 1955)

Born in Bamberg to Maro and Fanny Rosenwald, Julius was the youngest son of Moritz, Maro or Marum who was born in Burgebrach and his cousin Fanny Rosenwald from Bamberg eleven miles away. Julius's sister Lina Rosenwald, who married Max Josef Tuchmann, was the oldest of six children. Julius's father Maro was also the youngest of his generation of eleven children. Ernst Tuchmann in his memoir recalls the time when Maro went into business with the Tuchmann family; into the firm of S. Tuchmann & Soehne and a successful partnership in his offices on the south side of the railway in Nuremberg:

"The office moved, about 1925, after the firm entered into an agreement with Moritz Rosenwald who had an office and warehouse space at Heideloffstrasse 17 in Nuremberg."

In about 1925 the partners decided to combine their office and warehouse with the facilities of the firm of Moritz Rosenwald located at Heideloffstrasse. One partner who had always been very hard to get along with had to leave the firm. A long agreement was prepared with him which included the words: "Die Parteien stehen auf dem Gruessfuss." (The parties greet each other on the street).

The cooperation with Moritz Rosenwald was quite successful and lasted till 1934 when the Hitler regime necessitated a separation.

Maro Rosenwald died on the 15th March 1903 in Bamberg and his wife Fanny Rosenwald died on the 24th February 1917.

This further illustration of intermarriage, from the late Frank Craig, shows the close relationships between the Dessauer, Tuchmann and the Rosenwald families.
This chart, part of my correspondence to Charles Stanton, clearly shows the marriage of my great great grandfather Maro Rosenwald to his cousin Fanny Rosenwald.

Julius survived the war, the 'demob' notice of 25th November 1918 for his last day of service 14 days after the end of WW1 (11th November 1918) pasted into the ledger here. It's a guess but judging from the shaky signature above along with the G.K.V notices of transfer to the Border Guard from the Infantry, the horrors of warfare took it's toll on Julius, as with many thousands of others. His cousin, my grandfather Hans Tuchmann, suffered from shell shock and mustard gas poisoning achieving only partial relief after many hypnosis sessions.

By the time the war started in 1914, Julius and Sofie's three children Lotte, Willi and Erich were all very young infants. His father Maro had died in 1903 but his mother Fanny (née Rosenwald) passed away during the course of the war in 1917. In the ledgers we can read a list of Julius's vital statistics.

The King Ludwig Cross</span> As noted, on 30th October 1916, Julius recieved the honour of the King Ludwig Cross (K.L.K); an award for volunteer service to the Bavarian Army and the welfare of the country. The Cross was instituted by King Ludwig III on 7 January 1916 to be "a commemorative sign and recognition of thanks for those persons who during this war have performed with particular merit for the army or for the general welfare of the homeland through official and voluntary activities" (als Zeichen ehrender und dankbarer Anerkennung für solche Personen, die sich während dieses Krieges durch dienstliche oder freiwillige Tätigheit in der Heimat besondere Verdienst um das Heer oder um die allgemeine Wohlfahrt des Landes erworben haben). The Cross was cast in the Royal Bavarian Mint in Munich and was originally of blackened iron but in the later stages of the war, as a result of shortages of strategic materials, zinc was substituted.

Rosenwald Offices and Residence

In 1930s Nuremberg, Julius shared offices at 18 Heideloffstrasse, just south of the railway lines, with father‐in‐law Max Philipp Tuchmann. The first image below is from a directory of 1935 listing many of the Rosenwald family with an additional entry for Julius, residence on the Laufer Torgraben ‐ the eastern edge of Nuremberg city. Both addresses; the office in Heideloffstrasse and the residences in the Laufer Torgraben, are listed additionally to Julius's father‐in‐law Max Philipp Tuchmann with other Rosenwald and Tuchmann relatives.
